Sustainability is important to me, especially when it comes to where and how we live

'Sustainable design' is a phrase you hear a lot these days, but knowing how to deliver it is not always obvious, and often cannot be done on intuition alone. It's even harder to achieve in retrospect, but for the majority of existing buildings and spaces this is the only option.

Working with the Cambridge University Environmental Consulting Society, I wrote a report looking at the energy and water usage of my college in Cambridge to try and identify exactly where they should concentrate their efforts to get most efficiently reduce their environmental impact.

In the report, I analysed meter data gathered from around the college to identify key areas where the sustainability of the college could be improved. The report also contained recommendations about how best to improve these areas - cost-effective ways to improve building insulation, reduce energy usage and water consumption.
